The Getaway.

September 7, 2009

We had a really nice getaway. We went to L.A. for a couple of nights. Stayed here. Took walks on the beach, slept a lot, went to a movie at Grauman's Chinese Theater, and ate at some stellar restaurants, including Lucques (Susan Goin is my hero) and Pizzeria Mozza (twice in two days, in case you wondered how much we liked it). But perhaps the true culinary highlights were the coffee experiences we had (coffee can be considered a "culinary highlight," right?). First at LAMILL in Silver Lake (where that photo was taken), and then at Intelligentsia in Venice Beach. B thought LAMILL was superior, and I thought Intelligentsia was. Either way, they were the two best coffee experiences we've ever had in the U.S.

I took all of two photos (both of the café con leche I had at LAMILL) so there isn't much else to show you.

  1. that's too funny! somehow motherhood deepens ones relationship to the world, to the meaning of life, if one is lucky to ones partner, and low and behold, none of the books mentioned it but to coffee!!! hope you had fun. can't wait to hear more... so how many weeks????

  2. Jora, Luques is AWESOME, braised short ribs just melt away on the tastebuds. (hope you got to try them) Also, brew-wise I agree, Intelligencia is the best coffee I've ever tasted. (Michael's mouth froths when we are near there, we've only been to the one near Los Feliz which has an amazing cheese shop next door).
They do ship which is nice for those not living so close to LA. Sadly, coffee smells are sending me up nausea river right now. boo hoo. Glad you had fun.

  3. Mmm, makes me miss LA. I lived there for 6 or so years in my late teens and early twenties. Glad you had a good time and good coffees.

  7. LAMILL was great! Did you check out the little design store next door? They had some cute kid toys. Next time we are in LA we will have to check out the other eateries on your list :0)

  9. I experienced the LAMILL chai just a week after returning from a only-in-your-dreams kind of trip thru India and I admit that single cup from Silver Lake remains the very best chai I have tasted, ever.

  10. I love Lamill! They also serve it as some restaurants in OC and LA-- I had it at Mesa in Costa Mesa and think they have it at Bottega Louie in downtown. For those who need to drink decaf- I do not like decaf coffee but Lamill's decaf is actually full of flavor and delicious and is made chemical-free. :)

  11. Thanks for the coffee tips, I'm eager to try their beans... we're going up for my hub's bday next month. Have you experienced the beans from Caffe Calabria located in North Park? Also selling at Whole Foods... to die for. We've been hardcore Illy fans for years but these surpass!

  12. Jora, we just happen to be vacationing in LA when I read this entry yesterday. Tried LAMILL and loved it! Tomorrow is Pizzeria Mozza..it's nice not to have to take a shot in the dark when trying new restaurants. Thanks for the recommendations!
